Three types of "free" — and what each means.
Before testing any app, it helps to know which model you are dealing with. The word "free" covers very different realities.
A limited but usable free tier with no time pressure. You can use the app indefinitely with restrictions — message limits, locked features, or no adult content. The most honest model.
Full or expanded access for a limited period — usually 3 to 7 days — then payment required. Sometimes requires a card upfront. Check whether you are charged automatically when the trial ends.
You start with a credit balance that runs out within a few sessions. Technically free to start, but designed to push toward a purchase. The most common and least honest framing of "free."
What you can realistically test for free.
Even on a limited free tier, you can evaluate the things that matter most before paying.
- Chat quality — does the conversation feel coherent or scripted?
- Character consistency — does the app maintain the same personality across messages?
- Response variety — do answers vary, or does the app repeat patterns quickly?
- Interface and navigation — is the app pleasant to use?
- Upgrade pressure — how quickly and how often does the app suggest paying?
What you typically cannot test for free: adult content, voice chat, image generation, unlimited memory, and most premium character customization.

When free becomes frustrating.
Free tiers are designed to show you enough to want more. That is fair — it is a business. But there are patterns that cross the line from reasonable limitation into deliberate frustration.
- Cutting a conversation mid-sentence when the free limit is reached
- Locking features after you have already built a character or started a scenario
- Showing upgrade prompts at emotionally engaged moments in conversation
- Making it unclear how many free messages remain until you have already run out
- Using emotional language from the AI character to encourage upgrades
If you encounter these patterns on the free tier, they will not improve once you have paid.
